Nate In His Underwear!
Nate In His Underwear!
I'm usually pretty good at practicing what I preach. I eat well. I train regularly. I get a good amount of sleep. I'm productive.
But there's a bunch of other things I don't do even when I recommend that other people do it.
I don't stretch. I hate foam rolling and soft tissue work. I check email more often than I'd like to admit. And, until a week ago, I didn't take photos of myself.
(Well, sure, I take a lot of fun photos. But nothing that showed any flaws.)
When I started working with Mike Robertson, master strength coach and all-around bad-ass, he insisted I take four photos so he could assess my posture and develop my program.
So I obliged. And jumpin' Jesus Christ on a cracker do I have some problems.
Here's what Mike came up with by just looking at my photos.
Right Profile
Right shoulder is more kyphotic than left and t-spine is rotated
Right hip is in greater anterior tilt when compared to left
Chin is slightly protracted
Left Profile
Left side doesn’t look bad
Front
Feet are overpronated bilaterally (left is worse)
Right t-spine rotation/increased kyphosis evident again
Left pec/lat appears short/stiff due to internal rotation of hand/shoulder
Left IT band looks short as thigh/lower leg alignment isn’t great
Left lateral gastoc/peroneals also appear stiff
Back
Left leg is abducted; left glute medius is probably weak
Increased kyphosis of right t-spine is confirmed
Right glute appears smaller/less bulk than left (probably d/t anterior pelvic tilt)

So maybe you're trying to lose some weight. Perhaps, like me, you need to fix your posture. Could be you want to gain some muscle.
Whatever the case, do yourself a favor and snap a few photos and let an objective, knowledgeable party look 'em over.
It's a great way to get your ass in gear.

I can DEFINITELY tell that your left lateral gastoc/peroneals are stiff. :)
I think it's about time I did something like this. I can definitely tell that all the sitting I do for work is affecting my ability to do some of my lifts effectively.
For instance, my squats are tough on my lower back because I tend to round out at the bottom when I try to go ass-to-grass on them.
Nate, do you have any tips for us non-gurus about how to fix that problem?
Thanks!

Wow, Mike continues to amaze me! Everything I've read by him just blows me away.
