The Nate Green Experience

What's In Your Fridge?

Stocked, baby! Stocked, baby!

I had some fun with the Empty Your Gym Bag post and also got a lot of good recommendations for things I need to add. (Thanks for the heads up, guys!)

So I'd like to empty my fridge for your amusement.

In the nutrition section of Built for Show, I make a strong case that you can eat well on a budget.

I normally spend anywhere between $75.00-$150.000 per week on groceries. (That doesn't count eating out, which I do a few times per week.)

What you see in this picture cost $94.50. But I want to make it clear that you can eat healthy for much cheaper if you know what to buy and where to look.

If you're going to live life the fullest, you might as well make sure your body is up to the task by buying high-quality food!

Let's start from the top left and work our way across to the right, starting from the top shelf and going down.

Top Shelf:

Almond butter, Stubb's Barbeque sauce, Jubelale beer from Deschutes Brewery, Lifeline organic milk, organic raspberries, shredded cheddar cheese, Srichacha hot sauce, bottled water.

Middle Shelf:

Organic roma tomatoes, organic green onion, turkey sausage breakfast links (behind the tomatoes), Biotest Flameout fish oil caps, organic red onion, organic red peppers, Montana-grown gala apples, fresh ginger.

Bottom Shelf:

Omega 3 cage free brown eggs, two pounds of grass fed ground beef, two organic cage free chicken breasts, hard-boiled Omega 3 cage free brown eggs, Vanilla Coke Zero.

(Not Shown) Freezer:

Two packages Steam Fresh mixed vegetables (carrots, cauliflower, and broccoli), two wild-caught salmon slabs, four bison burgers.

So what's in YOUR fridge?

Holy cow, what a coincidence, I take a picture of my fridge about two weeks ago and just today post it on my T-Nation profile and then you do this blog, sweet. I eat at a military chow hall so I rarely ever have food in it my fridge but when I do its to-go boxes, I eat a lot of chicken here since its the cleanest meat we have and plenty of other stuff, not a whole lot of variety here. Mostly Biotest supplements in my fridge even though I know they dont all have to be refrigerated, its just a easy way to keep them all in one spot. So, here goes, I'm including my profile link with the picture but, I'll include the list anyways.

Flameout, Spike-Q'Lime and double shot, Rez-V, Vitamin D, Superfood, No sugar/high vitamin C popcicles, Tribex, Water, Poliquin Performance Insulin Plex, Metabolic Drive bars, ZMA, Rhodiola Rosea, Hot Rox, Fiber Choice.

Cool post Nate, I stumbled upon Jamie Thompsons website via a google ad and saw that your blogs are linked, shes a cool chick and speaks very highly of you.

How long will hard-boiled eggs keep in the fridge once you boil them? Will they last all week if you do them Sunday night? I'm going to start doing that.

Also, if you can find it, you need to eat yak steaks. We just got a yak farm near us in Vermont -- unbelievable. They have 1/6th the fat and 40% more protein compared to beef. More info here:

Yak is also known as "the fish of beef."

    My fridge is pretty boring:

Bulk boneless skinless chicken breasts from costco

Bulk boneless skinless chicken thighs from costco

Bulk Atlantic Salmon fillet from costco

    Flank steak

    Raisins

    Broccoli

    Brussels Sprouts

    Cartons of egg whites

    Cooked Quinoa

    Cooked red/white baby potatoes

Yellow mustard (my condiment for everything)

    Fish oil from costco

    Cook, eat, repeat.

    That is my life.

Yak? Really? I actually saw some at my "whole foods" store; I'll pick some up. (And some ostrich, too!)

    @ Jon

    Boring but practical, man.

Here are a few staples in my fridge:

-1 gallon of lowfat choc milk-I have been using this as my post workout drink. Google "choc milk as post workout" tons of great, recent exercise science data. One study showed choc milk elicited better glycogen recovery than most commercial drinks like Endurox and Gatorade. Also, it's much cheaper than throwing down $50 for a 5 lb jug of protein powder. I have been doing this for about a month-I haven't noticed any dropoff in my recovery.

-2% cottage cheese-usually my last meal of the day, b/f bed

-organic spinach (sometimes will chop/put in eggs)

    -egg beaters; and real eggs

    -tomatoes

    -broccoli

-shittake mushrooms-(chop and put in eggs)

    -pomogranate juice

    -Fresca

    -Green tea (Stash)

    -Yogurt

    -boneless chicken breast

-Sugar free Rock Star (white can)-for those mornings when coffee doesn't do the trick.

    Freezer:

-mixed berry medley (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries)

    -Tilapia

    -Frozen chicken breasts

    Pantry:

    -almonds

    -walnuts (great in w/oatmeal)

    -oatmeal

-cinnamon (great in oatmeal, in coffee)

    -some flavor of Post cereal

    -baked pot/sweet pot

    -baked cheetos/baked ruffles

    -tuna fish

    -100% whole wheat bread

    -Hersheys Dark Chocolate (loaded w/antioxidants)

    -Chilli

    -Coffee pods

    -Peanut Butter

-multi vitamin (whatever brand is on sale) , fish oil caps (ditto), Vit C (ditto), Amino Acid tabs by Paraval-I think? They were buy 1 get 1 free at BB.com. Gave 'em a try.

That's all I can think of-off the top of my head.

Nate, I still look back at this from time to time to stay inspired not buy a bunch of crap at walmart, and take the time and effort to buy the best food available for my family and me. Keep up the good work!
