Hey guys, Nate here. I'm proud to announce that I'm now the Program Director of Scrawny To Brawny. From now on all of my blogs and articles will be posted on the brand-new Scrawny To Brawny Blog. So if you enjoyed what you read here, please go check it out. (It's awesome, if I say so myself.) I'm keeping the NGE website alive for resource reasons, but will no longer be actively updating it. The best way to get in touch with me is through leaving a comment on the Scrawny To Brawny blog or by posting on the S2B Facebook page. See you guys over at the new blog!
What Kind of Guy Are You?
Nate Steele, Nate Green, Casey Becker
All right, hot shot, just what kind of a guy are you?
Do you train HIT (High Intensity Training)? Kettlebells? Total Body Training? Body-Part Splits?
Are you into bodyweight training? Olympic lifting? Powerlifting? Track and field?
How about Crossfit? Yoga? Martial Arts?
Or perhaps you’ve completely given up on “conventional†methods and actually prefer to don a turban and toga, grab a machete, and chase chickens around your pasture until you reach your cardiac threshold?
Just what style of training defines you?
They say when you’re a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
I say when you train yourself or your clients in a cookie-cutter fashion with only “your†method, you’re going to fuck something up, go out of business, or at the very least not get the type of results you planned for.
(In retrospect, I can see why mine didn’t stick: too heavy on the hyperbole.)
When asked what his “style†of training is, my friend and mentor Alwyn Cosgrove always says, Results.
There are a lot of ways and methods to accomplish your fitness goals. Some make more sense than others. Some take longer and some are simply not available. But the best trainer (or trainee, for that matter) uses a combination of methods, disciplines, techniques and training tools to get the best result in the least amount of time.
So go ahead and add some things to your toolbox. Just don’t live in it.
PS – Did you watch that video of my friend Ryan? He has combined strongman training, bodyweight exercises, athletic conditioning, powerlifting, and reactive training (plyometrics) to become a top BMX racer. How’s that for using all the tools in your toolbox?

Interesting.
Although, I question the efficacy of subjecting a trainee to rapid fire face slaps prior to performing a set of heavy squats.
But, perhaps it was intended as a localized warm up - he must have stimulated blood flow, the guy's face did look red.
Clearly, this is some new, elite-level training secret...there is so much about training that I do not understand. -
Thanks Nate for the compliment your a stand up guy.
Aamir the face slapping was more of a novalty but hey I squatted big so maybe it is a secret.
All of this was filmed for my DVD BMX Strong -
given that 99 percent of BMX guys probably haven't touched a weight consistently in their entire lives, one could imagine that elite level training would put a guy to the top of that sport real quick.

pacific - some people train by riding their bikes lots and doing no weight training, others like myself have a coach, a program that is all about building speed and strength, in and out of the gym. I've got a copy of Ryan's DVD on the way can't wait to see what i can to doing to increase my speed on the track.
