The Playground Workout
Go play outside.
I used to skip short, gorgeous hikes with my girlfriend because I didn't want it to affect my squat workout later that day. I stayed inside and drank green tea while my friends went to the park to throw the football around.
At the time it seemed necessary. (Gotta be fresh for the workout!) Now, I just feel like an asshole.
About the time I stopped writing exclusively about building muscle and strength, I started training outside more. I'm not sure what really sparked it.
Maybe it was because I was "growing up" and, after gaining 40 pounds of muscle, no longer wanted to get huge at any cost.
Maybe I just felt the need for fresh air or wanted to scare little kids on the playground. Or maybe it was because I no longer saw myself as a "weight lifter" or a "bodybuilder" or whatever other moniker we're using today.
I was just a guy who liked healthy food, working out, and living a good life.
My friends and I now spend at least one of our "training days" outside. We goof off and stay serious at the same time. The feel of hard training is still there. We push ourselves to do new things. We still sweat.
But it never feels like "working out." It feels more like…playtime.
And maybe that's what we need. Less structure. More play. A chance to use this body we've built, to slide down slides, climb ropes, or develop callouses on our hands from too many monkey bar swings.
I don't know. But training outside sure makes me feel better. It makes me feel alive. I think you'll like it, too.
Here's a recent workout my friend Kyle and I did. If you want, grab a dumbbell (we're using a 40-pounder, I believe) and give it a shot.

Very creative, Nate and Kyle!!! You guys get any weird, "hey, what are you 'boys' up to?" looks from the kids?
Looked very fun . . . liked the "weee" sound Nate made on the "Make it up as you go circuit" . . . very authentic sound effect, for serious :)
By the way, that playground has a little bit of everything. I need to find a local one like that!

I workout in a commercial gym; so while superset workouts are great; it may not be feasible :-(Hey John,
It involves both, but honestly, you can take the program and modify it however you need for your situation. Doing straight sets or super-sets won't make or break your progress, as long as you push yourself.Nate Green

I'm a bit older than your usual reader (51 years young as of last week) and like most Dads am fighting hard to stop the Xbox 360 becoming my 13 year old's best friend!! My secret weapon - the local park with a basketball court and playground with lots of equipment.
I only have Mike 50% of the time but when I do I make sure that he & I get down there at least twice a week ...And you know since I started doing this I hop down there once or twice by myself - it is just FUN!!
So I'm glad someone else likes it as well!

It's funny you posted this cause just last Sunday I got a buddy to go run around outside and do some outside workouts. It's something we plan on doing every Sunday. This gave me some good ideas.

A fun thing to do at a playground like this (with a group of friends) is to make an obstacle course or "circuit" and then compete against each other for time. That way it wont feel like a workout but instead it will be a fun competition with friends.
This playground would make a perfect obstacle course.
You will go crazy if you always workout in a gym, it's imperative to get outside when you can. Life is too short to spend all day in the gym.

Great workout! I've been doing the same thing. I have a park with a 1-3 mile trail near my house... so I'll go run a mile or so and then hit the playground for a killa bodyweight workout. You beat me to the blog post! haha... keep at it!

The jungle gym is a fantastic way to workout, but I do have to say that it is sad that as teenagers we shy away from it because it just isn't cool. It isn't until our more adult years we stop caring what people think. If more kids just simply had fun, North America would be a much healthier place... And 'funner'. Good call on the workout, if it's good enough for kindergardeners, it's good enough for us!

Very nice and inspiring videos, i always workout on a playground during the summer when the air is hot. Only thing i do in the gym is heavy weight for my legs because pistols gets easy to quickly.
